Description
[JAPAN - CHINA]. Chinese & Japanese Raw Silk Trademarks.
An exceptional collection of over 200 raw silk trademarks.
No place, no publisher, circa 1900.
In-4 volume (310 x 210 mm). 4 quires sewn into the spine of a brown half-percale cardboard binding with corners, covers of grained black paper. Blank label glued to the upper cover with the printed inscription "Fabrique de Registres - Marmorat & Gonnelle".
Volume of 368 pages, all numbered in pencil. It should be noted that many pages have been cut, though without interrupting the handwritten pagination.
The cardboard binding shows slight wear.
Numerous labels with creases, small tears, some with missing sections.
This album brings together a collection of approximately 220 trade marks, including 85 Chinese, 122 Japanese, 3 Syrian and Lebanese, and 11 Italian. These labels take the form of stamps and labels, but consist mainly of woodcut, lithographed or chromolithographed prints. The plates depict various trading houses (Yoshimoto, Sumitomo, Rioshingumi, Kokaen Seishiyo, Tanba, etc.) and feature a variety of designs: views of Mount Fuji, traditional Japanese and Chinese motifs, and a Statue of Liberty.
The collection is distinguished by its first-rate technical execution; the Japanese labels are very beautiful and of exceptionally high graphic quality.
