ROSTAND (Edmond). An Evening in Hernani. Following in Hugo’s footsteps, Rostand finds himself in Hernani (Spanish Basque Country) one evening and turns the experience into a poem. A copy on Japanese paper, beautifully bound in full morocco. Paris, Fasquelle, 1902. One volume, In-12 (255 x 210 mm). Full black morocco, smooth spine, author and title gilded, date at the foot, double blind-stamped bands on the covers, gilded head, cover and spine preserved. Later binding. [2] f., 31 pp. Minor signs of wear. First edition of this lyric poem. An extremely rare copy of a deluxe edition most certainly limited to a few copies, this one on untrimmed pearlescent Japanese paper. A perfectly executed copy in a simple morocco binding, with the very large untrimmed endpapers and the covers and spine intact. By 1902, Edmond Rostand (1868–1918) was already famous and a member of the Académie Française. Although he had not yet built his villa in Arnaga, Cambo-les-Bains, he was already familiar with the Basque Country, where he had stayed to recover from an illness. It was during this stay that he discovered that Victor Hugo had already been there and that one of the famous writer’s works was directly inspired by the name of a village in Gipuzkoa: Hernani. Rostand could not resist going to explore the place for an evening, and recounts in verse his adventures in Hugo’s footsteps. A fine copy of this poetic account which brings together, around a Basque village, two giants of French literature.
