Description
[STENDHAL]. Armance, or Scenes from a Paris Salon in 1827. An extremely rare first edition of Stendhal’s first novel, in splendid contemporary English bindings stamped with the emblems of the Westport Library. Paris, Urban Canel, 1827. 3 volumes in 3 parts, in-12 (100x165 mm), cherry-coloured long-grain half-maroquin with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with the title, solid and dotted fillets, a repeated gilt fleur-de-lis and a full-length embossed eagle, speckled edges, edged slipcase (contemporary binding). VIII (preface) and 177 pp.; 191 pp.; 243 pp. Minimal rubbing, slight losses to some edges and joints, a few faint foxing spots, more prominent in the margins and on the title pages. Extremely rare first edition of Stendhal’s first novel, published anonymously and inspired by his romantic break-up with the Countess Curial. Set during the Restoration, the novel describes the impossible love story between Octave de Malivert, a tormented and melancholic young man, and his cousin Armance de Zohiloff. Stendhal shed some light on the plot of his novel by revealing, in a letter to Prosper Mérimée, the impotence from which his hero suffers. [Vicaire, I, 454–455]. Provenance: from the library of Westport House (Ireland), bearing their coat of arms stamped on the spines of the bindings, and from the library of Bernard Lonite and his wife, with the monogram ‘R.B.L.’ on the inside front cover of volume 1. A charming copy in a striking contemporary English binding, looking remarkably fresh, all the more remarkable given that the few known copies are often presented in ordinary, later bindings.
