An exceptional composite atlas comprising 122 geographical maps of France and Belgium, most of which are enhanced with colour; the vast majority are by Nicolas Sanson, with a few by Jean Boisseau, Hubert Jaillot, Jean Tarde, and Melchior Tavernier. A unique copy bearing the bookplate with the coat of arms of the lawyer and historian Denis-François Secousse (1691–1754). No place, 17th/18th century. In-plano (400x530 mm), full brown sheepskin, spine with 7 raised bands, compartments decorated with a central fleur-de-lis and gilded corner fleur-de-lis, gilded title on a red leather label, triple gilded fillet framing the covers, red speckled edges (contemporary binding). 3 handwritten title pages, 1 title leaf (handwritten title within an engraved border), 122 maps, most double-page and enhanced in colour (numbered from 1 to 89 with duplicate No. 15, then from 101 to 132), and 3 handwritten endpapers. The spine is completely split on the front cover and partially on the back, the endpapers are missing or worn away, the binding is rubbed and scratched, there are slight white marks on the covers, losses at the corners, and a few foxing spots and faint water stains. A composite atlas comprising 122 geographical maps of France, Belgium and Germany, the vast majority of which are double-page spreads, enhanced with colour to highlight the outlines, and featuring the title engraved within beautiful decorated cartouches. Most are the work of Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville (1600–1697), appointed the King’s official geographer by Louis XIII, author of over 300 maps which he published through Pierre Mariette from 1632 onwards, the majority of the maps presented here bearing that imprint. His maps cover France, Belgium and part of Germany (including Strasbourg, Lyon, Besançon, Autun, Mâcon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Tours, Sens, Troyes, Auxerre, Nevers, Chartres, Orléans, Besançon, Bourges, Alby, Poitiers, La Rochelle, Angoulême, Périgueux, Agen, the Dauphiné, Provence, Mainz, Flanders, Bruges, Cologne, Antwerp, Namur, Liège and Utrecht). 11 maps are the work of other renowned cartographers, including: - 2 maps by Pierre Duval (1619–1683): Map of the Diocese of Évreux in Normandy, Diocese of Aire in Gascony, - 3 maps by Hubert Jaillot: Diocese of Le Mans, - 1 map by Jean Le Loyer: Diocese of Angers, - 1 map by Melchior Tavernier (map of the Diocese of Albi, featuring a profile of the town of Albi in the top right-hand corner, dedicated to Gaspard de Daillon du Lude, Bishop of Albi, and bearing his coat of arms), - 2 maps by Jean Tarde (1561–1636): Description of the region of Quercy, Description of the Diocese of Sarlat and Haut Périgord, - 1 map by Jean Boisseau: Map of France divided by the provinces of the Gallican Church (in 4 copies), - 1 map by Denis de Sainte-Marthe (1650–1725): France divided into archbishoprics, bishoprics and abbeys. The atlas is preceded by a page featuring the handwritten title within an architectural frame adorned with a compass, an armillary sphere and a spherical map of the world. There is also a table of maps written in ink over six pages at the beginning and end of the volume. Some maps appear in multiple versions, notably the map of the ‘Provinces of the Galican Church’, of which there are four copies with distinct outlines to indicate various religious divisions, or the map of the ‘Government of Provence’ in three copies showing similar variations in outline. The maps have all been skilfully reassembled to form this uniform copy, bearing on the last page the bookplate with the coat of arms of Denis-François Secousse (1691–1754), who was a lawyer at the Parliament and a French historian, author of numerous works relating to King Charles the Bad which are still regarded as authoritative today, as well as several historical and literary memoirs published in the collection of the Académie des Inscriptions.
