Description
WOOD (Robert). The Ruins of Palmyra, otherwise known as Tedmor, in the Desert. One of the most sought-after atlases of ancient archaeology, this volume on Palmyra features 59 full-page copperplate plates. London, n.p. [published by the author], 1753. Folio, beige half-basane, spine with raised bands edged with gilt fillets and a red title label, yellow edges. 2 blank folios – 50 pp. – 59 plates, including four double plates mounted on tabs. In English. Binding rubbed. Pages tarnished and with foxing. Light water stain in the upper right-hand corner, occasionally encroaching slightly on the image. A few well-executed restorations in the margins on the reverse of the panoramas. Very rare and discreet handwritten notes in pencil. First edition of this rare British atlas on the ruins of Palmyra, complete with its 57 plates, including a very fine panorama spread over three plates (59 in total) and mounted on a tab. Robert Wood (1717–1771) travelled extensively, including to Palmyra in 1751 with Giovanni Battista Borra (1713–1770), where they spent five days drawing and surveying these ruins, which had then been little studied. On his return, he had his drawings and those of his Italian colleague engraved, notably by Paul Fourdrinier (1698–1758) and Thomas Major (1720–1799), the first engraver to be admitted to the Royal Academy.
