French first edition of this seminal work on the dissemination and theorisation of classical architecture, illustrated with nearly 221 woodcut plates, including 161 full-page plates, as well as several engraved initials and headpieces and a frontispiece. First published in 1570 in Venice, Andrea Palladio’s (1508–1580) manual aims to teach ancient architecture, rationalise it and demonstrate its intellectual superiority. After several reprints in Italy, it was first published in France in 1650 by Edme Martin at the request of Cardinal Richelieu, based on the translation by Roland Fréart de Chambray (1606–1676). The woodcuts used here are the same as those in the original.
The book is in good condition in its 17th-century binding.
