Description
MUCHA (Alphonse). The Lord’s Prayer. Commentaries and compositions by A. M. Mucha. A sublime original illustration of the “Lord’s Prayer” by Alphonse Mucha, comprising 7 black photogravures and 14 colour plates, as well as numerous Art Nouveau-style ornaments. Paris, Champenois et Piazza et Cie, 1899. Folio (300x450 mm), grey cloth-bound cover illustrated in black and gold by Mucha. 1 colour lithographed title page (repeated on the cover), 7 chromolithographed plates, 7 full-page black plates and 7 pages of calligraphic text with colour lithographed borders, all mounted on tabs. Cover slightly soiled and rubbed at the edges, small tears at the top and along the edges, cover detached from the block. Spine restored with strong grey paper. First edition of the masterpiece by Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939), a unique work blending his Art Nouveau style and spiritualism through a written and pictorial analysis of the seven verses of the Lord’s Prayer, divided across three pages. The first contains the verse in Latin and French within a striking Art Nouveau setting featuring a symbolic female figure; the second presents the calligraphic text of Mucha’s interpretation, set within a rich floral frame and adorned with an illustrated initial; the third presents Mucha’s pictorial interpretation through an allegorical work printed in photogravure. There are thus seven photogravures and fourteen colour plates for the verses and their interpretations, to which are added a fully illustrated colour title page, a remarkable colour composition for the ‘Amen’ concluding the prayer, a frame for the colophon and two ornaments for the copy number and the ‘printed’ mark. Limited edition of 510 numbered copies; this is one of 400 copies on paper in the style of the Marais paper mills (No. 226). A fragile but complete copy with all its plates in fine condition.
