LOUŸS (Pierre). Aphrodite. Mœurs antiques. Pierre Louÿs’s masterpiece of fiction, featuring a signed autograph dedication to his friend and illustrator Maxime Dethomas. A copy in a fine binding by Franz. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1896. In-8 volume (221 x 139 mm). Raspberry-coloured morocco binding, four gilt fillets framing the covers, decorated raised spine, four gilt fillets on the inside, gilt head, untrimmed, original cover preserved. Binding signed by Franz. XII pp., 332 pp. Second edition, known as the ‘deluxe edition’, published a few months after the original. It was printed in a run of 609 copies. This is one of the 550 numbered copies on vellum paper with Japanese-style covers (no. 266). A copy enhanced by a beautiful autographed dedication: To Maxime Dethomas // his friend // Pierre Louÿs. A superb copy.
