Description
FORTIS (Abbé Alberto). A Journey to Dalmatia. Translated from the Italian. An interesting account describing the journey undertaken in 1771–1774 by the scholar Abbé Fortis along the Adriatic coast, in what is now Croatia and Montenegro. Bern, published by the Typographical Society, 1778. 2 volumes in-8 (198 x 131mm). Marbled and glazed fawn calfskin, decorated raised spine. 1f.n.ch, 248 pp., 1f.n.ch, 276 pp., 18 plates. Top caps worn away. Normal wear and tear. Small tears at the top of the binding of volume 2 (approx. 2 cm). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with 18 copper-engraved plates, including 12 fold-outs. One of the plates contains 2 engravings (costumes). This journey is recounted in the form of letters addressed to prominent figures: Jacques Morosini of Venice, the Count of Bute, Antoine Vallisneri, professor at the University of Padua, etc. The author deals mainly with the geology, natural history and antiquities of the regions visited, with interesting observations on the inhabitants of Trau, Spalatro, Primorie, Zara, Sebénico and the islands, as well as on the Morlachs and Montenegrins. Provenance: ‘Sophie Potocka’ with handwritten ex-libris on the title pages. Countess Sophie Potocka (1760–1822) was famous in her day for her beauty and her adventurous life. A fine, fresh and clean copy.
