Cover slightly soiled, spine slightly rubbed, small tears at the corners and along the edges, 4 pages trimmed at the bottom margin. First edition of this account of Count Arthur de Gobineau’s journey to Newfoundland, where he was sent in the course of his diplomatic duties. The author of the controversial Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races provides here a wealth of historical and geographical information, displaying a keen curiosity regarding the ‘exoticism’ of the island’s landscapes and its inhabitants.
