A rare first edition of this comprehensive history of Florence, from its legendary foundation to the year 1410.
In Florence, published by Giorgio Marescotti, 1580. (Colophon: in the printing house of Giorgio Marescotti, 1580).
One volume in-4 (228 × 164 mm). Full stiff vellum, ribbed spine, decorated with a red morocco patch and an elegant design of small gilt ironwork. Red speckled edges. Later binding.
[40], 829, [1] pp.
Spine slightly discoloured, a few minor flaws. Some slight foxing and a slight corner watermark in the margin of several leaves at the beginning.
A fine Florentine publication, printed by Giorgio Marescotti (15..–1602), bearing his wood-engraved mark on the title page and colophon with the motto ‘Et vult et potest’. Text adorned with illustrated initials.
The author, Domenico Buoninsegni, a Florentine magistrate and historian, presents here a chronicle in the spirit of the humanists, which constitutes a valuable source for the political and civil history of the Florentine Republic up to the dawn of the 15th century.
In his dedication to François I de Médicis, second Grand Duke of Tuscany, the printer Marescotti explains that this history was entrusted to him for publication by Giovan Maria da Urbino.
