Description
[PRINTS]. FOULQUIER (Valentin). Four sets of etchings on Chinese paper. Molière. La Fontaine. La Bruyère. Boileau. A very rare collection of four sets of etchings on Chinese paper illustrating the great classical authors of the Grand Siècle, from the library of André Barrier (Paris 1870–1957), a great bibliophile and collector of prints. No place, no publisher, no date, [Tours, Alfred Mame, 1867–1878]. Four quarto volumes (300 x 200 mm). Later (circa 1920) Bradel-style bindings in wine-coloured half-cloth, with plain spines adorned with a leather title label bearing gilt lettering. Portrait, 48 plates (enriched with 3 added engraved portraits of Molière); portrait, 50 plates; portrait, 20 plates; portrait, 17 plates. A few scattered light foxing spots. First print, pre-letter on China paper, of these very fine etchings engraved by the painter and illustrator Valentin Foulquier (1822–1896). Originally intended for prestigious editions of Molière’s plays (1878), La Fontaine’s Fables (1875), La Bruyère’s Characters (1867) and Boileau’s Poetic Works (1870), these compositions are distinguished by their exquisite craftsmanship and remarkable attention to detail, which earned the artist a reputation among the publishers of his time. Provenance: The library of André Barrier (1780–1957), President of the Paris Court of Appeal and an eminent collector of prints, with his bookplate affixed to the front endpapers. A leading figure in bibliophilia during the first half of the 20th century, he presided over the Société des Cent Bibliophiles and was an active member of the Amis des Livres, the Bibliophiles du Palais and the Livre Contemporain. A fine, complete set of his well-preserved prints, from a first-rate library. Good overall condition.
