Description
HÉMARD (Joseph). ROSTAND (Edmond). Cyrano de Bergerac, a heroic comedy in five acts in verse. An illustrated edition featuring original drawings by Joseph Hémard. Rostand’s masterpiece in a superb, ornate mosaic binding by Flammarion, inspired by the world of ‘sword and cloak’. Paris, Georges Briffaut, Le Livre du Bibliophile, undated [circa 1927]. Volume in-8 (230 x 175 mm). Full raspberry red and navy blue maroquin leather in a mosaic pattern forming a design representing duality, highlighted diagonally by gold and silver fillets. On the front cover, a crescent moon from which hang a cape and a sword, in midnight blue, beige, black and lavallière morocco. The design on the covers continues onto the moiré satin endpapers and half-leaves. Gilded head. Edged slipcase. Binding by Flammarion. VIII + 272 pages. Spine slightly sun-faded, small tear at the top of the second joint (2 cm max.). Dust jacket corners rubbed. A beautiful edition richly decorated with numerous drawings by Joseph Hémard, engraved and hand-coloured in the Charpentier workshops. A copy from the first edition on Imperial Japan paper, limited to 125 copies, this being one of the 70 with a black suite (no. 109). A remarkable copy, combining a well-preserved artistic binding with a deluxe edition of great freshness.
