Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. PELLICO (Silvio). Autograph manuscript. "My Prisons. Memoirs of Silvio Pellico da Saluzzo. Translated from the Italian by Chevalier Ch...... 1855". Complete manuscript of an unpublished translation of Prigione by Silvio Pellico (1789–1854). S.l. 1855. In-8 volume (213 x 145 mm), red long-grain half-morocco, ribbed spine decorated with friezes and blind-stamped and gilt fillets, gilt title. Contemporary binding. Black ink, 324 pp. Slight wear and tear from use. Original manuscript signed "Chevalier Ch...", carefully written with very few corrections. Mes Prisons is a masterpiece by the Italian writer and patriot Silvio Pellico (1789–1854), one of the most widely published books in France in the 19th century, with nearly 150 editions. The main French translations are those by N. Thiel (1840), Count H. de Messey (1844), Abbé Bourassé (1838), Mme Woillez (1846) and A. de Latour (1833). An autobiographical account, this work recounts the most dramatic period of his life: his arrest in Milan on 13 October 1820 (accused of belonging to the Carbonari and of conspiring against the Austrian monarchy), his conviction in 1822, followed by his long imprisonment in the grim Spielberg prison in Moravia (1822–1830). A very fine copy, fresh and clean.
