Description
[DARIGRAND (Edme-François)]. *L'Antropophagie, ou les Antropophages*. A scathing attack on the corruption of the farmers-general, brought together with eight other pieces on the financial crisis on the eve of the Revolution. Amsterdam [Paris], 1764. 9 pieces in one volume, in-8 (200 x 124 mm). Marbled tan sheepskin, decorated raised spine, red edges. Contemporary binding. 37 pages. Binding worn, spine restored with losses to the cap ends. Marbled endpaper missing. Minor handling marks and stains. First edition of this inflammatory pamphlet against the farmers-general, featuring a striking intaglio-engraved frontispiece depicting a group of financiers before a ruined palace, symbolising the squandering of state resources by private interests. Attributed to Edme-François Darigrand, the work follows his famous Anti-Financier, which earned him a spell in the Bastille in 1764. Published immediately upon his release, L’antropophagie is even more scathing, denouncing a tax system he deems a ‘man-eater’. The volume constitutes a valuable artificial collection bringing together eight other rare economic and political treatises: -[ANONYMOUS]. On the Cultivation of Uncultivated Land, the Property of Parishes, and Some Ideas on the Uncultivated Land of the King’s Own Domain. By M. de F.D.M. [François de Moutier]. 1764. 27 pp. -[ANONYMOUS]. The Key to Mysteries. No place, no date [c. 1763]. Title page, dedication ‘To the Count of Saint-Florentin, Minister of State’, 46 pp. -[ANONYMOUS]. Richesse de l’état. No place, no date. 16 pages, 8vo. Contains a ‘Table showing the distribution of two million people.’ Brochure followed by its supplements: -THE WEALTH OF THE STATE. No place, no date, 16 pages, 8vo. -MODEST DOUBTS ON THE WEALTH OF THE STATE. Or Letter written to the author of this system by one of his colleagues. No place, no date. (Paris, printed by B. Ruinart), 21 pages, 8vo. -CURRENT RESOURCE for the needs of the State. No place, no date. 16 pages, 8vo. -LET US UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER or The Rambling of the Old Notary. No place, no date. 31 pages, 8vo. -[Simon-Nicolas-Henri Linguet (1736–1794)]. NOT EVERYTHING HAS BEEN SAID. Candide’s reply to Dr Pangloss on his financial optimism. No place, no date. 13 pages, 8vo. An exceptional copy due to the combination of these texts, bearing witness to the ferment of ideas and the rise of protests against arbitrary taxation in the 18th century.
