Description
CÉLINE (Louis-Ferdinand). Bagatelles pour un massacre.
A fine, out-of-print copy (No. LXIII on alfa) of the first edition of Céline’s second pamphlet.
Paris, Denoël, 1937.
In-8 (150x230 mm), red half-shagreen with corners edged with a blind-stamped fillet, spine with blind-stamped faux-ribbing, author and title in gilt lettering, gilt head on endpapers, endpapers and inner covers in marbled paper, covers and spine preserved (contemporary binding).
379 pages.
Minor scuffs, leather slightly browned in places, margins very slightly browned.
First edition of Céline’s second pamphlet, a lengthy anti-Semitic diatribe which sold 75,000 copies upon publication before being withdrawn from sale in 1939, then reprinted by Denoël on two occasions under the Vichy regime, in 1941 and 1943. A bestseller during the Occupation, this scandalous work still stirs up controversy today, as evidenced by the virulence of the debates sparked by Gallimard’s planned reissue in 2018.
Limited edition of 500 copies and 73 non-commercial copies; this is one of the 40 non-commercial copies on alfa (No. LXIII).
A fine copy, attractively bound.
