Description
SAVARY (Jacques). Opinions or Advice on the Most Important Matters of Commerce. First edition of this treatise on commercial practices, written by one of the leading figures in trade and finance of the late 17th century. Paris, Jean Guignard, 1688. Quarto (252 x 170 mm), full speckled brown calfskin, ribbed spine with mahogany morocco title label, compartments decorated with small filigree gilt ironwork, gilt roulette on the edges, red speckled edges (contemporary binding). 20 unnumbered folios, 788 pages, 16 unnumbered folios (tables and errata); engraved vignette. Binding rubbed, cap bands damaged, front cover joint partly split, corners slightly blunt, leather missing from the back cover, author’s portrait missing, slight water-stains at the margins of the first 11 leaves, rare foxing, tear without loss on leaf 5 and page 7. First edition of this work on the art of negotiation, concerning the method of letters and bills of exchange... by Jacques Savary (1622–1690), General Farm Manager and a member of most of the councils and commissions relating to trade in the late 17th century, who is chiefly known for his very significant contribution to the 1673 Ordinance on Trade and for the publication of *Le Parfait Négociant*, a veritable bestseller, two years later. Le Pareres, a term referring to the ‘opinions and views of merchants on matters of trade’ (Académie Française Dictionary, 4th edition), is conceived, in a sense, as a sequel to Le Parfait Négociant, filling in the gaps in the latter and providing, where necessary, the correct practices to follow, based on practical and concrete cases. A vignette, engraved by Gérard Edelinck, depicts cherubs busy at work on a quay with measuring instruments, whilst others, in the background, are loading crates onto a ship. A fine, relatively fresh copy.
