Limited edition of 300 copies, this one being no. 19. A collection comprising 22 illustrated letters by Manet, presented by Jean Guiffrey. These intimate documents, most of which were produced during the final years of the painter’s life, bear moving and sincere witness to his isolation, his melancholy and his deep attachment to his circle of friends, as illness gradually withdrew him from Parisian life. Provenance: from the library of André Barrier (Paris 1870–1957), with a wood-engraved bookplate and red stamp. President of the Court of Appeal and President of the Cent Bibliophiles. On the front endpaper, also Jean Barrier’s etched bookplate.
