Description
[POETRY]. Le Monde poétique. A journal of world poetry. A rare set comprising the first five volumes of this journal of poetry and criticism, containing a dedication to Victorien Sardou and a handwritten annotation by him on a poem by Heredia. Paris, Rédaction et Administration, 1884–1888. 5 large quarto volumes, pine-green half-shagreen, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small gilt poppy-flower motifs, gilt head edges. Between 300 and 600 pages; engraved title pages, headbands, initials and vignettes. Caps, joints and raised bands rubbed, some pages have browned. The first five volumes, out of six, of this French poetry journal, featuring, side by side, unpublished poems, translations of foreign authors, studies on the art of poetry and theatre reviews. Drawings and decorations created for the journal by Taxile Doat. Among other works, it includes poems by Heredia (four of which were reprinted, slightly modified, in *Les Trophées* in 1893, and two in his *Poésies complètes*), by Sully Prudhomme (whose two compositions were reprinted in *Les Poésies*, 1879–1888), François Coppée (three poems reprinted in his complete works in 1888, whilst the last constitutes an unpublished preface to Pages d’autrefois, published by Pille and Roger-Millès), and even a young Rostand (whose “Sur la plage” does not appear to have been included in his poetry collections). Annotation probably signed by Victorien Sardou on page 209 of Volume V concerning the first two lines of the first tercet of Heredia’s Michel-Ange: "Words.... no meaning!" Bound together with Volume 2: ROGER-MILÈS, L. Eugène Manuel. Paris, A. Lanier, coll. "Les Poètes Français contemporains", 1885. 49 pages, engraved portrait of Eugène Manuel by Léopold Flameng. Dedication by the author to Victorien Sardou on the half-title page. A fine, very fresh set, bound in a uniform style.
