Description
[ROME] - TOTTI (Pompilio), REIMARO (Alberto). Illustrated Ancient Rome: including the churches and monuments that once stood there, [...]. Important 17th-century guide to Rome, richly illustrated with copperplate engravings. Aernhem, Haagen, 1662. In-12 volume (132 x 81 mm), brown sheepskin, smooth spine decorated with romantic metalwork. Blue speckled edges. Early 19th-century binding. 3 unnumbered pages, 434 [i.e. 433] pp., 6 unnumbered pages, 122 plates. The frontispiece and 6 plates are missing. Corners worn, gilt lettering faded. Some leaves trimmed short at the binding, rare traces or stains from handling and a few passages marked in pencil. First German translation of the famous guide to Rome, ‘Ritratto di Roma antica’ by Pompilio Totti, first published in Rome in 1627. A rare German version by the Lübeck magistrate and poet Albert Reimarus († 22 Sept. 1641). The publisher Johann Friedrich Haagen illustrated it with 128 copper-engraved plates. Our copy comprises 122 plates and 3 in-text illustrations, including one copperplate and two woodcuts. This illustrated guide, intended for a scholarly audience, was highly successful in its day. It was reprinted in 1633 before being reissued numerous times by the publisher Filippo De’ Rossi and his successors from 1645 onwards. A fine copy of this rare work.
