A unique copy in mosaic bindings by René Kieffer, printed on Japanese paper and enriched with a series of 132 compositions by Agnès Sabert on the same paper, all the artist’s original drawings, some of which are unpublished, a series of ‘smoked’ and colour samples executed by the artist, 2 L.A.S., several autograph poems illustrated by the publisher and a proof with all the colour corrections in the publisher’s hand.

2 volumes in-8 (190x240 mm), black morocco, on the covers a large gilded and mosaic-style composition of havana, beige and turquoise morocco, evoking two birds of prey holding each other by the beak, framed by double gilded fillets extending onto the spine, plain spine decorated with squares and rectangles of havana and brown morocco, with the title and author’s name gilded in the centre; wide inner border of the same morocco set with gilded fillets as a frame and the signature ‘René Kieffer’, brown silk endpapers and half-linings, double endpapers, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (René Kieffer).
231 pages, 132 in-text illustrations coloured by stencil by Agnès Sabert, including 61 headpieces and tailpieces, based on watercolours by Agnès Sabert.
Spine slightly faded, minor rubbing on the edges, slight wear to the slipcases.
A charming edition of the Symbolist masterpiece by Albert Samain (1858–1900), illustrated with 113 stencil-coloured vignettes based on watercolours by Agnès Sabert, the pseudonym of Agnès Humbert (1894–1963), who was also an art historian and a famous French Resistance fighter, and the founder of the first Resistance movement, the ‘Groupe du Musée de l’Homme’.
Limited edition of 550 copies; this is a unique copy on Japanese paper, hand-verified by the publisher. It is enhanced by a suite of compositions on Imperial Japanese paper bound in-fine and a second volume comprising: - 111 original drawings in Indian ink and 5 previously unpublished drawings
- a series of colour samples executed by the artist for the edition, including 3 previously unpublished works
- a series of “smudged” versions of all the illustrations, including 3 previously unpublished works
- a letter from the Mercure de France addressed to René Kieffer concerning the publication rights to the text
- a signed autograph letter from Agnès Sabert sent to Ploumach and dated 24 August 1927
- 8 pages of autograph poems by the publisher with coloured illustrations
- a proof with all the colour corrections, handwritten by the publisher for the preparation of this edition.
