A very fine copy in a double-bound edition by René Kieffer, printed for the Viscount de la Croix-Laval and accompanied by an album of lithographs by Alexandre Lunois, printed separately on white vellum. Paris, For Les Cent Bibliophiles, 1901. In-8 (170x225 mm), fawn Jansenist morocco, spine with 4 blind-stamped false ribs, blind-stamped fillet on the edges, lemon morocco linings framed by a thick gold fillet and adorned with stamped, gilded and mosaicked brown morocco eyelets, lavallière and red, bookbinder’s signature in the leather, brocaded silk endpapers with ochre and lemon floral decoration on a cream background, double endpapers, edges gilt on strips, covers and spine printed on red paper preserved, edged slipcase (René Kieffer). VII and 168 pages, 170 colour lithographs by Alexandre Lunois, in the text or as overprints, some across two pages. Spine very slightly faded and rubbed. A splendid first illustrated edition of this short story by Prosper Mérimée, adorned with 170 charming colour lithographs by Alexandre Lunois, delicately placed within the text or as overprints, some across two pages. It was published by Eugène Rodrigues, with an introduction by Maurice Tourneux. Limited edition of 125 non-commercial copies on hand-made ramie paper, reserved for members of the Cent bibliophiles, this being No. 57, printed for the Vicomte de la Croix-Laval, containing in a second bound volume an album of the lithographs printed separately on white vellum. Elegant binding by René Kieffer, lined with a beautiful Art Nouveau design.
