Description
BALZAC (Honoré de), LOBEL-RICHE (Alméry). The Girl with the Golden Eyes. An edition illustrated with thirteen etchings by the painter and engraver Lobel-Riche.
A splendid copy on old Japanese paper (No. 2), containing four states of the etchings and an original drawing signed by Lobel-Riche, in an elegant Canape binding adorned with a beautiful copperplate set into the front cover.

In-4 (220x305 mm), red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, copper plate inlaid on the upper cover, ribbed spine with gilt fillet, floral garlands and double gilt border between the raised bands, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide inner border of the same morocco set with a triple border featuring gilt fleurons at the corners, signature "Canape R.D." in the leather, wine-coloured moiré silk linings and endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (Canape, 1927).
86 pages, 13 original colour etchings by Lobel-Riche, including a portrait of the author as a frontispiece, all protected by captioned borders.

A charming edition of this haunting love story taken from Balzac’s Comédie humaine, illustrated with 13 delicate original compositions etched in colour by Alméry Lobel-Riche (1877–1950).
This is the 5th volume of the ‘Le Livre du bibliophile’ collection.
Limited edition of 500 numbered copies; this is one of 14 copies on antique Japanese paper in the standard format (No. 2), containing 4 states of the etchings (pure etching, black state, black state with a remark, colour state with a remark) and an original pencil and ink drawing, signed by Lobel-Riche, mounted at the front of the volume (proof for the illustration on page 54). It is further enhanced by the copperplate of the illustration on page 50, not mentioned in the colophon.
A charming binding executed in 1927 by Georges Canape, with a beautiful copperplate by the illustrator on the front cover, depicting an elegant full-length female figure.
