László Barta (1902–1961), known as Brutus, was a versatile artist: painter, lithographer, mosaicist, book illustrator and theatre set designer. Born in Nagykoros, Hungary, he left his country—then under Horthy’s dictatorship—to settle in France in 1926. From 1927 onwards, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne until 1938.
Having settled in Saint-Tropez, he was placed under house arrest in Saint-Florent, Corsica, during the war. Actively involved in the Resistance, he was deported to an Italian camp in 1943. Naturalised as a French citizen in 1948, he resumed his artistic career and travelled to Ravenna to learn the art of mosaics from the local masters.
