Folio (290 x 380 mm), half-basane with black corners, ribbed spine set with a gilt frieze, gilt fleurons between the ribs, author’s name and title gilt on burgundy leather panels, endpapers and inside covers of marbled paper, illustrated covers preserved (contemporary binding).
82 and 1 f. (table), title page featuring the cover illustration, 6 wood-engraved figures after Kupka, initials, drop caps, floral garlands of various colours framing the pages.
Minor rubbing, a 3 cm tear in one joint, a small snag at the top of the front cover, foxing and water stains on the original covers, some foxing in the margins.
A charming edition of the Song of Songs, translated literally and adapted for the stage by Jean de Bonnefon, elegantly illustrated with 6 woodcuts in black based on the compositions of the Czech painter František Kupka (1871–1957), with pretty initials and tailpieces, and colourful floral garlands framing the pages. The play was first performed in Paris on 22 May 1905.
A fine copy, attractively presented in its original covers.
