A very fine first edition in Japan (No. 1) of this French edition, illustrated with 38 black-and-white compositions by Kei-Sai Yei-Sen, in a lovely binding with a Japanese-style mosaic decoration.

In-8 (180x210 mm), blue half-shagreen edged with a broad gilt fillet, plain spine decorated with flowers and fans in gilt and mosaics of brown and vermilion morocco, title and author in gilt letters within a frame bordered by brown morocco mosaic flowers at the corners, ‘J.C.’ monogram at the foot, colour-illustrated covers by Henri Guérard preserved, untrimmed.
XII and 370 pages, 38 black-and-white plates by Key-Sai Yei-Sen.
Spine faded, scuffing to the headbands, on the joints and in the corners.
French edition of this Japanese historical novel by Tamenaga Shounsoui, based on the story of the 47 Ronin, one of Japan’s most popular tragedies. Translated from the English version by Shiouichiro Saito and Edward Greey by Bernard-Henri Gausseron, it is illustrated with 38 black-and-white compositions by Kei-Sai Yei-Sen.
Limited edition of 50 copies in Japan, this being No. 1.
