A rare and interesting work inspired by Buffon, combining zoology, comparative anthropology and moral satire.

Volume in-8 (204 x 30 mm), fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated with a red morocco label and rich gilt decoration. (Binding from the 1820s–30s). (10) + VIII, 430 pp.
Small tear to the top corner. The first 6 leaves show water damage at the top. The frontispiece has slight foxing.
First edition illustrated with a fine frontispiece engraved by De Launay after Marillier.
Work published anonymously, attributed to Foucher d’Obsonville. (cf. Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, II, p. 276).
The naturalist and writer Foucher d'Obsonville set sail for the East Indies at the age of twenty and brought back a wealth of notes describing grasshoppers, tigers, vultures, elephants, monkeys... as well as the customs and cultural practices of the peoples he encountered.
