Description
[PRINTS]. WILLETTE (Adolphe). Fortune. The Satyr. Autumn. Tales. Arts of Pleasure. A spectacular and exceptional set of five original lithographic scrolls, forming a continuous panorama stretching over 20 linear metres. No place, no publisher, no date [c. 1890]. Five scrolls of varying dimensions (from 3.39 m to 5.25 m, with a constant height of 39 cm). Total length: 20.25 linear metres. At the ends of some sheets, the margins are frayed in places or have tears, and a few fragments are missing from the edges. Five joins where sheets have partially come away. Traces of handling and small pinpricks at the edges where the work was hung. A single edition limited to 300 copies, this one numbered 134/300 and signed in graphite by the artist in the bottom right-hand corner of the five panels. Each composition is formed of several sheets of lithographic paper carefully joined together at the time to create these monumental friezes. An emblematic work by the Montmartre painter, illustrator and caricaturist Adolphe Willette (1857–1926), this suite depicts, with the artist’s characteristic verve and poetry, a multitude of putti moving through allegorical and narrative compositions. A rare complete set in good overall condition.
