Description
LALANNE (Maxime). A Treatise on Etching. This treatise by Maxime Lalanne (1827–1886) is regarded as the definitive work on the technique of etching in the 19th century. Paris, Cadart and Luquet, 1866. In-8 volume (245 x 176 mm), Bradel-style binding in green half-percaline with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with a medallion, title, floral motif and date in gilt. Untrimmed margins. Covers in vellum, printed in red, preserved. (Binding by Stroobants). 106 pp. Minor signs of wear to the binding. Corner restoration to the front cover. A few very rare foxing spots. First edition, printed on laid paper, complete with all 8 etched plates. Copy enriched with an autographed dedication by the author to Arsène Houssaye (1815–1896), a leading figure in 19th-century literary and artistic life. The 1865 catalogue of lithographs, engravings and etchings published by Cadart & Luquet (22pp) has been bound in with the main volume. A copy from the library of André Barrier (Paris, 1870–1957), bearing his bookplate on the front endpaper, accompanied by that of Jean Barrier. André Barrier, President of the Paris Court of Appeal and a great bibliophile, was a collector of prints and President of the Cent Bibliophiles. A fine copy of this important work.
