Description
[MILITARY MANUSCRIPT – ROYAL ARMS]. The Touraine Infantry Regiment, comprising four battalions. A valuable handwritten report on the prestigious Touraine Regiment, preserved in a luxurious green morocco binding bearing the arms of Louis XV. No place, circa 1762. Square 8vo volume (160 x 120 mm). Full contemporary green morocco, the royal arms stamped in gold in the centre of the covers within a triple gilt border, plain spine with decorative lettering (title running lengthwise), gilt edges. 42 printed and hand-written pages. Leather very slightly faded, a few faint marks on the lower cover, but a copy in superb condition. A document for the use of the high command, detailing the precise composition of the staff and companies for the regiment’s four battalions. It lists the names of the officers, captains, lieutenants and second lieutenants. The Régiment de Touraine (later the 33rd Infantry Regiment) was one of the most illustrious regiments in the royal army. Established in 1625, it was expanded to four battalions from 1747 to 1748 and from 1762 until 1775. At the head of the first battalion’s staff is the Prince of Montmorency, an emblematic figure of the military high nobility. The register of the volume contains numerous names, most of which have been struck through. A very interesting document for military history and genealogical research.
