Description
GODOY (Armand). Beethoven’s Sonata in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2. A unique copy printed on vellum in the name of the poet and publisher Jean Royère and his wife, enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by Armand Godoy to Jean Royère, in the form of the manuscript of the sonnet ‘Envoi’ which concludes the collection. Paris, Auguste Blaizot, 1927. Quarto (250x325 mm) in Bradel binding, beige cardboard cover printed in red, dust jacket with flaps and publisher’s slipcase. Approximately 20 pages (unpaginated), printed in black, red and blue, with red initial letters. Slight wear to the spine of the folder and on the slipcase. First edition of this collection by Armand Godoy (1880–1964), a Symbolist poet of Cuban origin, who switched languages at the age of forty to write ‘in the language of Baudelaire’. Splendid typographic printing in black, blue and red, composed and published under the direction of G. Govone. Limited edition of 227 copies; this is a SINGLE COPY specially printed in the name of Mr and Mrs Jean Royère, on genuine prepared goatskin. The flyleaf bears an autographed dedication by the author to the poet and publisher Jean Royère (1871–1956), in the form of a handwritten sonnet, corresponding to the final poem in the collection, entitled “Envoi”, the last triplet of which reads: "Beethoven splits the Night, but it is you, Jean Royère, Who propels my vessel towards the eternal mystery Where the Sphinx awaits us with her great granite eyes." An extremely rare copy, in excellent condition.
