Description
FRANCE (Anatole). LEROUX (Auguste). Queen Pédauque’s Rotisserie.
A masterpiece of Art Nouveau bookbinding, the result of a collaboration between Henri Noulhac, one of the greatest Parisian bookbinders of the Belle Époque, and Adolphe Giraldon (1855–1933), painter and decorator.
Paris, Édouard Pelletan, 1911.
In-4 volume, (270 x 206 mm). Havana morocco leather, covers adorned with a border consisting of a double gold fillet crossing to form compartments, a square panel of dark blue morocco leather at the corners, and a floral composition of dark green and old rose morocco leather at the four cardinal points; in the centre, within a round frame, is a mosaic composition depicting, on the front cover, a bird roasting over a fire, and on the back cover the initials SC within two frames—one in tan and one in black—on a red background, surrounded by thorns; smooth spine decorated in the same style, with a light brown morocco frame on the inside, adorned with gold fillets and mosaic motifs as on the covers, linings and endpapers in dark green moiré silk, double endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Noulhac - A. Giraldon. 1912).
Portrait, (3 leaves, the first two blank), 442 pp., (3 leaves, the last two blank), printed cover.
Deluxe edition, illustrated with 176 compositions by Auguste LEROUX (1871–1954), including a full-page portrait of the author and seventeen full-page figures in colour or bistre, wood-engraved by Duplessis, Ernest Florian, Eugène and Émile Froment, Gusman and Perrichon.
A single print run limited to 444 copies; this is one of 47 copies numbered on heavy laid paper in square quarto format.
This copy is enhanced with an original drawing by Leroux, signed with the artist’s initials, mounted on a mat and mounted at the top, as well as the publication prospectus.
A sumptuous period binding resulting from the collaboration between Henri Noulhac and Adolphe Giraldon (1855–1933), a painter and one of the first artists to design decorations specifically intended for bookbinding. Giraldon helped to revitalise the aesthetics of the book by proposing original compositions more closely linked to the work’s content. He collaborated with the greatest bookbinders of his time, but maintained a special relationship with Noulhac: the latter even entrusted him with the artistic training of his daughter Madeleine, who went on to create numerous designs. A piece representative of the golden age of French bookbinding, when book decoration became an art form in its own right.
A perfectly preserved copy.
