Description
[ARTIST'S BOOK] - MAGDALINSKI (Erika). Contre L'Ouest vol noir...
A unique work of art by Erika Magdalinski from the library of Gilbert Lascault.
No place, no publisher, 1988.
Oblong in-8 volume (125 x 180 mm), artist’s book in leporello form, original structure assembled using toothpicks to hold the sheets in place, presented in a cloth-covered slipcase.
First edition of this artist’s book, conceived and produced entirely by the visual artist Erika Magdalinski. The work, which makes no mention of a print run, is almost certainly a unique piece.
It is accompanied by an autographed dedication from the artist to the writer and art critic Gilbert Lascault:
‘For Gilbert Lascault, on a rainy day... April ’89. Erika.’
The book is distinguished by its unusual, handcrafted binding. It is adorned with original abstract compositions painted in a twilight palette (black, grey, pink and bronze), highlighting poetic texts entirely handwritten by the artist.
Born in East Germany and based in Paris since 1968, Erika Magdalinski creates a body of work that blends visual arts and literature. Her work explores the limits of figurative representation, whilst her stories, written in a French she herself described as ‘exotic’, bear the mark of her experience of exile.
