Description
SAINT CYPRIAN (Bishop of Carthage, 200–258 AD). D. Caecilius Cyprianus, revised from ancient texts and supplemented with additional material, through the diligence and labour of Gul. Morelli.
A rare 16th-century Parisian edition of this patristic classic, preserved in its original binding bearing the coat of arms of Charles Le Goux de La Berchère, Archbishop of Narbonne.
Parisiis, apud Gul. Morellium, Parisiis (i.e. Guillaume Morel), 1564.
Folio volume (322 x 215 mm). Contemporary binding, full brown calfskin, cold-stamped fillets framing the covers with fleurons at the corners and large coat of arms in the centre (Charles Le Goux de La Berchère), decorated raised spine.
6 pp. (2 bl.), 40 unnumbered pp., 483 pp., 18 ff. index (complete).
Signs of wear, repairs to the joints, caps and edges, slight water stains on the covers.
Passages underlined and some handwritten marginalia.
An excellent and beautiful folio edition produced in Paris by Guillaume Morel, well printed, with a wood-engraved mark on the title page and attractive wood-engraved typographical ornaments.
Dedicatory epistle to Charles IX.
The significance of the work of the Bishop of Carthage lies in the fact that he was not only one of the early Church Fathers alongside Saint Augustine, but also that he was a witness to the very earliest centuries of Christianity, martyred in 258 during the persecutions of Emperor Valerian; he embodies both the founding word and the sacrifice of the Christian origins. Also known for his exemplary conduct during the plague that ravaged the Empire in the 3rd century, he left such a striking account of it that the epidemic is now named after him: the Plague of Cyprian.
Distinguished provenance:
-Charles Le Goux de La Berchère (1647–1719) Archbishop of Aix, then of Albi, transferred to Narbonne (1703–1719) with coat of arms, bookplate pasted on the inside front cover and handwritten bookplate on the title page.
-René François de Beauvau (1664–1739) Archbishop of Narbonne (1719–1739) with a handwritten bookplate on the title page.
A fine copy of this rare and highly regarded work.
