[BELTRAND (Jacques)]. VALÉRY (Paul). Masters and Friends. Camaïeux by Jacques Beltrand. A fine copy signed by Paul Valéry, set in a superb Art Deco mosaic binding by Philippe Gonin. Paris, n.p., 1927. Quarto volume (340 x 245 mm). Black morocco, covers and spine featuring Art Deco geometric decoration created from pieces of grey, cream and red morocco in a mosaic pattern, highlighted with blind-stamped lines and palladium, smooth spine bearing the title, grey velvet endpapers and linings, gilt head edge, box with edging. Binding by Gonin. 163 pp. ‎ Minor rubbing at the top joint. Discreet transfer marks opposite certain engravings. The slipcase has rubbing at the corners. First collective edition, partly original, illustrated with 15 portraits drawn and wood-engraved in monochrome by Jacques Beltrand. Limited edition of 200 copies on Arches vellum, this being no. 26. Copy bearing the signature of Paul Valéry, accompanied by the autograph note of provenance: ‘Copy belonging to Émile Truffaut’. A collection of essays and studies by Paul Valéry composed “on the subject of eternal men or illustrious books”, accompanied by portraits of Descartes, La Fontaine, Montesquieu, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Huysmans, Berthe Morizot, Mallarmé, Hugo, etc. The text “Impressions et souvenirs” is a first edition. Philippe Gonin, a Swiss bookbinder based in Paris from 1923, was notably the bookbinder to Princess Henriette of Belgium. A very fine copy.
