MONTAIGNE (Michel de). The Essays. A fine copy of the final edition of The Essays, to which Marie de Gournay contributed, in a late 18th-century binding. Paris, Abel l'Angelier, 1600. In-8 (175 x 110 mm), full mahogany-coloured calfskin, smooth spine decorated with three horizontal fillets, title label in amaranth morocco, small gilt tools, double blind-stamped fillets on the covers, blind-stamped roulette on the headbands, gilt fillet on the fore-edges, red edges. Later binding. 4 blank folios, 1165 pages; title-frontispiece, ornamental initials and cul-de-lampe. Spines and caps rubbed, corners worn, pages 437–442 reproduced on very old paper, title-frontispiece partly trimmed. Reprint of the 1598 edition, with the ‘short’ preface by Marie de Gournay. This edition, based on the second posthumous edition published by Angelier, served as the reference for all 17th-century editions. The frontispiece title page is by Jean de Gourmont and bears the same epigraph as the Bordeaux copy. Ex-libris crossed out on the title page.
