Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811) was a German naturalist and ethnographer. At the request of Empress Catherine II, he travelled for six years (1768–1774) from one end of the country to the other, from Saint Petersburg to the borders of China via the shores of the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains, in order to gain a better understanding of these distant territories. He returned with a wealth of valuable observations, ranging from botany to ethnology—particularly concerning the Tatar peoples—as well as cartography and zoology, all recorded in these volumes which remain highly sought-after to this day.
Very fine, rare volumes, in their uniform period bindings.
Provenance: Engraved bookplate reading "Bibliothèque de M. le Baron de Nervo" in each volume (except the atlas).
