FARRÈRE (Claude) and ROCHE (Camille). Fumée d'Opium. A sumptuous Orientalist binding by René Aussourd, containing one of 25 non-commercial copies on Japanese paper, with three additional states of Camille Roche’s etchings. Paris, Éditions Lapina, 1929. Quarto (220x275 mm), vermilion morocco, mosaic composition of green, red and brown morocco, featuring a poppy flower coiled around a dragon at the centre of the front cover, with interlacing gilt fillets evoking wisps of smoke all around, the same design repeated on the spine and corners of the back cover, wide inner edge in the same morocco adorned with interlacing gilt fillets as a frame and the signature "René Aussourd", linings and endpapers in black moiré silk, double endpaper, illustrated covers and spine preserved, half-morocco slipcase, matching edged slipcase (René Aussourd, 1950). 194 pages, 37 original etchings printed on rag paper, 18 initial letters and 17 tailpieces drawn and engraved on copper by Camille Roche. Minor browning on the back cover, a fragile hinge on the slipcase. A luxurious edition of this collection of short stories written under the influence of opium by Claude Farrère, illustrated with 37 original etchings, 18 initial letters and 17 tailpieces drawn and engraved on copper by Camille Roche. Limited edition of 175 copies; this is one of 25 non-commercial copies, printed on Japanese paper and signed by the author and illustrator on the colophon, containing 3 additional states of the etchings (pure etching, black state, state with remarks) and 2 additional states of the initial letters and tailpieces. It is further enhanced by the publisher’s illustrated subscription form (a loose double-leaf folio). A splendid creation signed by the master Charles Aussourd, nephew of the bookbinder Charles Meunier.
