A remarkable copy in a binding by Georges Cretté, enriched with 2 original wash drawings by Jules Chadel, 3 proofs, 3 autograph letters and 2 original drawings by Chadel on gold-leafed satin adorning the endpapers. Paris, Pro Amicis, 1932. Quarto (260x345 mm), full coarse-grained black morocco, covers adorned with a cross formed of cold-stamped and gilded circles and discs, spine plain, decorated with the title in gold and the same cold-stamped motifs, wide inner border of the same morocco edged with a thick gold fillet as a frame and bearing the bookbinder’s signature, linings decorated with original drawings by Chadel on gilded satin, endpapers of black and gold moiré silk, double endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, original covers preserved, edged slipcase (G. Cretté, successor to Marius Michel). X and 295 pages, 80 wood-engraved compositions by Jules Chadel in monochrome, including 1 frontispiece and 2 double-page inserts. Text, initials and headpieces printed in three colours: black, red and gold. Minor rubbing on the edges, slight foxing on Chadel’s original drawings. A splendid edition of the Gospel according to Saint Luke, presented in Maistre de Sacy’s translation with a preface by Henri Bremond, illustrated with 80 compositions by the painter and engraver Jules Chadel (1870–1941), wood-engraved with the assistance of Germaine de Coster and Savinienne Tourette, and hand-printed using Japanese methods by Yoshijiro Urushiba. Limited edition of 120 numbered copies on Japanese paper, this being No. 76, printed for Charles Miguet. It is enhanced by: - 2 large original wash drawings signed by Chadel, corresponding to the drawings adorning the endpapers, - a set of 3 fine-line proofs, one of which is full-page, signed in pencil by Chadel, - 2 autograph letters from the artist relating to this work, on pelure paper, each adorned with a beautiful original wash by Chadel - A handwritten proof for the colophon illustrated with an original wash by Chadel, - 1 autograph letter from the bookseller and expert Édouard Loewy, dated 7 November 1959, describing the copy and referring to ‘the beauty of this piece of fine bibliophilia’, - 1 subscription form bound in-fine. Ex-libris by Charles Miguet on the endpapers. A precious copy in a fine binding designed by Georges Cretté and decorated by Jules Chadel.
