A Description of the Life and Deeds of Prince Eugene, Duke of Savoy…[History of Prince François Eugène de Savoie].
The biography of Eugene of Savoy, printed in Russia at Saint Petersburg in 1740, published by the Printing House of the Imperial Academy of Sciences.
Saint Petersburg, [Санктпетербургъ], Printing House of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1770.
1 vol. In-4 (240 x 183 mm). Full marbled and glazed havana calfskin, triple fillet edging on the covers, ribbed spine adorned with a mosaic-patterned red morocco patch and an elegant design of panels decorated with perforated metalwork. Red edges. Contemporary binding.
Frontispiece, 26 unnumbered pages; 394 pp., [15] plates.
Top cap worn away, normal wear and tear, 3 corners punctured, the introductory pages numbered by hand, some usual foxing.
First Russian edition, in quarto format, published a year after the original French edition, translated by Taubert and dedicated to the Russian Field Marshal Burckhardt Christoph von Münnich.
Illustrated with a portrait engraved by P.G. Martternovy and 15 engraved plates, mainly fold-out, depicting his principal battles and sieges.
A rare work from the presses of the Academy of Sciences Printing House, founded in 1728. Carefully printed, with the text adorned with copper-engraved illuminated initials; titles and place names in Russian. For this edition, the prestigious quarto format was chosen and the number of plates increased to 15, compared to 13 in the French edition. This is clearly a luxury production, intended to make a lasting impression.
Eugene of Savoy-Carignan (1663–1736), known as Prince Eugene, commander-in-chief of the armies of the Holy Roman Empire, was one of the greatest generals of his time. His various campaigns, notably against France during the War of the Spanish Succession, against Italy and the Turks, earned him the rank of Generalissimo, and later, towards the end of his life, Governor of the Netherlands. Napoleon I regarded him as one of the seven greatest generals in history. Beyond the figure’s military biography, the book offers a highly relevant political history of modern Europe.
