An extremely rare copy of this deluxe edition, illustrated with 100 original etchings by Charles Huard, containing an original watercolour and a page of original drawings signed by the artist, in perfect bindings by Vermorel. Paris, Édition d’Art H. Piazza, undated [1904]. 2 volumes in-4 (210x280 mm), coarse-grained red morocco, 6 thick and thin gold fillets broken at the corners framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated in the same manner, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide inner border of the same morocco set with framing fillets and gilt corner pieces, linings and endpapers of raspberry-coloured moiré silk, gilt head on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, box edged (Vermorel). 161 and 173 pages, 100 original etchings by Charles Huard, including 10 colour plates. Minimal rubbing, slight wear to the slipcases. First deluxe edition of Flaubert’s final novel, illustrated with 100 original etchings by the painter and engraver Charles Huard (1874–1965), including 10 in colour. A unique limited edition of just 30 copies on Rives vellum, this being no. 8, containing an original watercolour signed by Charles Huard and a page of original pencil drawings signed by the artist (character studies). It is further enhanced by an illustrated sheet of 5 etchings, including one in colour, printed in a very small run (5 folios bound in-fine). A very fine copy, impeccably bound by Vermorel.
