Description
[BINDING FEATURING THE COAT OF ARMS OF LOUIS XV]. COLLOT (Pierre). Explanation of the First Truths of Religion. A superb copy in a contemporary binding bearing the arms of Louis XV. Paris, Charles-Pierre Berton, 1729. In-8 (125x200 mm), full red morocco, smooth spine decorated with compartmentalised fleurons, gilt title on an ochre leather label, covers stamped with the arms of Louis XV within a triple frame with gilt corner fleurons, all edges gilt, gilt frieze on the edges, interior lace (contemporary binding). 2 unnumbered leaves (title, colophon), 504 pp. and 2 unnumbered leaves (table of contents, approval), a title medallion, an engraved vignette at the head and a floral drop-head. Slight scratches and scuffing on the leather, discreet restoration and slight browning at the bottom, some pages slightly browned, a few minor foxing spots, approval page torn in the middle. A new edition of this compendium of religious pedagogy intended for those responsible for the instruction of young people, addressing all the major themes of the Catholic faith in the form of questions and answers. It is the work of Pierre Collot (c. 1672–1741), who, after completing his theological studies, was put in charge of catechism classes in two Parisian churches, at Saint-Paul and Saint-Nicolas des Champs, before becoming parish priest of Chevreuse, where he died in 1741. A very fine and rare copy bearing the royal arms.
