Description
PERSE (Aulus Persius Flaccus). The revised work of Aulus Flaccus Persius, the most distinguished writer of satires. Edited by John Baptist Plautius Cornutus, his tutor, and John Britannicus Brixianus, as well as Bartholomew Fontius, men of the highest learning, with their own illustrations and most useful notes. Furthermore, a recently added alphabetical table which wonderfully encompasses everything worthy of knowledge.
Perse in the light of the humanists: a precious post-incunabulum edition printed in Venice.
Venetiis, In Casis Bernardini de Vianis de Lexona, 1520 (15 December).
Folio volume (312x223mm). Quarter-vein with corners; on the spine, the date of publication in handwritten black letters. (Modern binding – 20th century).
10ff.n.ch - 104 ff.
On the title page, old handwritten scribbles and bookplates in black ink, crossed out. The last three leaves show restoration work in the bottom margin. Paper slightly faded, with signs of handling, and water stains on several leaves, mainly at the beginning and end.
A fine Venetian edition, with a title page set within a broad wood-engraved border, text in round type, wood-engraved initials of various sizes—some illustrated—and seven lovely woodcut vignettes at the head of the seven satires.
A rare work, of interest for the commentaries by the humanists Giovanni Britannico († 1518), Bartolomeo della Fonte (1446–1513) and Giovanni Battista Plauzio (active in the 16th century); it bears witness to the renewed interest in moral satire and Stoic philosophy during the Renaissance.
A rare, well-preserved copy.
