[MAISTRE (Xavier, Count of)]. A Journey Around My Bedroom. A masterpiece of the ‘stationary travelogue’ genre, set in a fine First Empire binding of long-grain havana morocco. Paris, Dufart, Year V 1797. Small 12mo volume (130 x 84 mm), full long-grain havana morocco, fine blind-stamped lace border highlighted by gold-dotted framing on the covers, smooth spine, compartmentalised and decorated with small gilt and blind-stamped ironwork, chains on the corners, interior lace, all edges gilt. Binding slightly later. 144 pages. Spine very slightly lighter in colour, scattered light foxing. Rare first French edition, the first printing of which features a lovely frontispiece engraved on copper by Auguste Blanchard. The author’s first book, the original edition of which was published anonymously in Lausanne in 1795. The dreamlike journey was written during the forty-two days of confinement imposed on him in his room at the citadel of Turin for having engaged in a duel. A fine copy.
