Partially original edition (12 of the 40 tales appear here for the first time) of this collection published anonymously by Count Louis de Chevigné (1793–1876), illustrated in the first printing by Ernest Meissonier, a highly renowned painter of the 19th century, specialising in small historical genre scenes. The illustrations include two portraits engraved on steel by Jean-Marie Buland after Ernest Meissonier, one depicting Chevigné, the other his friend Charles-Guillaume Sourdille de La Valette, beneath which appears for the first time the epistle in verse addressed to him, as well as 40 wood-engraved vignettes at the top of the page, 34 by Meissonier and 6 by Valentin Foulquier. ‘This illustration of the Contes rémois, admirably wood-engraved, will remain one of the finest Romantic works.’ [Carteret, III, 158].
A fine copy, enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author on the half-title page and 42 proofs of the engravings on silk paper, pasted at the end.
A very fine copy, attractively bound by Devauchelle.
