Description
[MAP – EUROPE]. FER (Nicolas de). Map of Europe divided according to the extent of its main regions, with key points marked in accordance with the observations… of the Royal Academy of Sciences. Extremely rare wall map of Europe by Nicolas de Fer, adorned with a frieze of illustrated vignettes symbolising 16 different European peoples and surrounded by two columns of text presenting a geographical description of the continent and an explanation of the decorative elements. Paris, G. Danet, 1730. Map measuring 160x108 cm, engraved and mounted on canvas, with some highlights in green. A few faint foxing spots, mainly in the text area. Superb wall map of Europe by Nicolas de Fer, surrounded by a frieze of illustrated vignettes depicting 16 different European peoples through local scenes and customs, each accompanied by a short text in a medallion (notably featuring the Turks, Icelanders, Spaniards, Muscovites, French, Portuguese, Tatars, English and Germans). It is framed by two columns of text, one presenting a geographical and topographical description of the continent (countries, islands, coasts, rivers and lakes, etc.), the other explaining the decorative elements. A cartouche surmounted by the royal arms of the Dauphin, to whom the map is dedicated, specifies that it was published after the world map and before the other maps of the continents, and indicates that De Fer was preparing a ‘Table of these new observations in a separate small volume ’ in order to justify the modifications made to his maps. An impressive and richly decorated map, in very fine condition.
