A luxurious edition illustrated with 17 compositions by the painter Paul Gervais, in a splendid mosaic binding by Charles Meunier in the Art Nouveau style of the period. Évreux, Charles Hérissey, 1900. Quarto (205x290 mm), full buff morocco, mosaic-style framing decoration on the covers, comprising stylised scrolls and floral garlands in brown morocco with gilt metalwork and laurel wreaths in yellow ochre morocco mosaic in the spandrels, spine with 4 raised bands similarly decorated, cold-stamped fillet on the edges, wide inner border repeating the scrolls and corner motifs in mosaic of yellow ochre and midnight blue morocco, signature "Ch. Meunier, 1901’ in the leather, linings and endpapers of brocaded silk with red, blue and gold floral decoration, double endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (Charles Meunier, 1901). XXIV, 149 pages and XVI (catalogue), 17 colour plates by Paul Gervais etched by Bertrand, including 1 frontispiece, 6 hors-texte and 10 in-text plates. Minimal rubbing to the spine, very rare and minute foxing. A luxurious edition of this Roman tale in verse by Louis Bouilhet (1821–1869), illustrated with 17 elegant compositions by the painter Paul Gervais (1859–1944), etched in colour by Bertrand. A. Join-Lambert wrote the preface as well as the note on the manuscript variants and Flaubert’s corrections; Flaubert was a childhood friend of the author. A unique edition limited to 140 copies on Vélin du Marais, numbered and initialled by the publisher; this is No. 101. An elegant copy, superbly bound in 1901 by Charles Meunier (1865–1948).
