Paris, Ladvocat, 1837.
4 volumes in-8 (210 x 135 mm), brown half-basane, plain spine decorated with gilt fillets, title in gilt letters. Contemporary binding.
2 ff. + 402 pp., 2 ff. + 396 pp., 2 ff. + 406 pp., 2 ff. + 384 pp.

First edition, a rare copy enhanced by an autograph dedication from the author to ‘Mr. the Count of Lebzeltern, with the author’s best regards’.
Fallen out of favour with the July Monarchy and exiled to Vienna, Marmont undertook this journey as a consolation for his political setbacks. Carrying a letter of recommendation from the Austrian Chancellor Metternich, the Duke of Ragusa was often received with exceptional courtesy during his journey. The work bears witness to the author’s keen powers of observation, as he paints a remarkable panorama of the countries he visited.
The atlas and a fifth volume, published in 1838 under a different title, are missing from this set.
Auguste de Marmont, Duke of Ragusa (1774–1852), was a Marshal of the Empire and a major figure in the Napoleonic Wars.
Appointed a Peer of France during the Restoration, he served as ambassador to Russia (1826) and governor of Paris, before ending his career in exile following the events of 1830. He devoted his final years to writing his memoirs.
The Count of Lebzeltern was a leading Austrian diplomat who served as a close adviser to Prince Clement Metternich.
A fine copy from a prestigious provenance.
