Description
D'ESTAMPES (Louis). Imitations of Anacreon’s Odes in Free Verse. A rare collection of verse by a career officer and amateur poet who wrote for his own pleasure and for his friends and family. Paris, Dondey-Dupré, 1811–1812. 2 volumes in one in-8 volume (215 x 135 mm). Full red long-grain morocco, ribbed spine, compartmentalised, decorated with a rich design of small ironwork. Covers decorated with a double-line border, a scrollwork border and, in the corners, the letters A.T. All edges gilt, endpapers in blue moiré silk. Binding signed P. Bozerian the Younger. Frontispiece, 3 unnumbered leaves, 9–147 pp., 1 unnumbered page; 2 unnumbered leaves, 7–221 pp., 1 unnumbered page, 1 unnumbered errata leaf. The half-titles are missing. Spine slightly discoloured. A few foxing spots. A single edition printed in Paris in 1811–1812, published at the author’s expense, featuring on the frontispiece the only known portrait of the author, drawn by Fouquet in 1790 and engraved by Chrétien. This fine family copy is enhanced by a touching autograph dedication: ‘given by the author to his son Omer’, handwritten on the half-title page bound after page 14. A handwritten note by Omer d’Estampes, added on a separate sheet, continues this discreet exchange between father and son. Louis (1734–1815), Marquis d’Estampes, a member of the military nobility, served as a colonel in the Grenadiers de France, then in the provincial regiment of Rouen. A soldier of the Ancien Régime, he found, alongside his duties, the leisure to devote himself to writing. His works, published at his own expense, are extremely rare. A very fine copy in a beautiful Empire-style binding by P. Bozerian the Younger.
