MACINTOSH (William). Travels in Europe, Asia and Africa, containing a description of the manners, customs, laws, produce and manufactures of these regions, and the current state of British possessions in India; begun in 1777, completed in 1781. William Macintosh was a Scottish traveller, writer and political observer (1737–1813). His work *Travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa* (1782), which includes an account of a journey to India between 1777 and 1781, had a significant impact and influenced political debates in Europe and America, particularly regarding the administration of colonies and the rights of local populations. Indeed, the work contains ethnographic observations, political critiques and reflections on British imperialism, with particular attention to colonial injustices and the social consequences of European domination in India.
Following this is *The Voyage of Capper, Colonel of the East India Company*, and an extract from Sparmann’s voyage to the Cape of Good Hope.
Provenance: ‘Sophie Potocka’ with handwritten ex-libris on the title pages. Countess Sophie Potocka (1760–1822) was famous in her day for her beauty and her adventurous life.
